Improving Occupant Wellness in Commercial Office Buildings through Energy Conservation Retrofits

چکیده
There is increasing literature demonstrating the link between building indoor environmental quality, and occupant health and productivity, driving the corporate real estate industry to investigate how to integrate wellness features in both new and existing building stock. Meanwhile, new voluntary standards to promote occupant health are becoming adopted alongside sustainability standards. As commercial building owners and tenants seek to improve occupant conditions and incorporate wellness, apparently conflicting priorities must be balanced, particularly improving indoor environmental conditions has the potential to increase energy. This paper presents a framework to consider retrofits holistically and considering the benefit of improved conditions both qualitatively and quantitatively. Where poor conditions exist, published literature demonstrates a lost productivity cost that exceeds typical building energy costs, and this is quantified in the financial analysis presented. Energy retrofits provide a unique opportunity to integrate wellness-enabling features because the energy savings can offset marginal energy or operating cost increases for particular wellness interventions. This paper presents a flexible, customizable framework to develop potential retrofit bundles and evaluate them considering economic, sustainability, wellness, risk and occupant experience factors to identify the optimal zone of retrofit. An illustrative case study using real building data demonstrates how the framework might be applied to a real project and customized to achieve unique stakeholder priorities. Energy Conservation using Daylight Energy Transfer through Windows : Case of Office Buildings
The exterior envelope of buildings play a significant role on the amount of energy consumption in office buildings that are located in warm climates. The present study focuses on the reduction of energy consumption by integrating daylight and artificial lights, and by changing the characteristics of exterior envelope of buildings including window coverage and dimension of buildings. Moreover, t...
متن کاملOccupant Behavior and Schedule Prediction Based on Office Appliance Energy Consumption Data Mining
Plug load and Heating Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) systems are the two largest energy consumers in commercial buildings. The use of the 2 systems is closely related to occupant behavior and schedule. It is significant to learn the occupant behavior pattern and predict occupancy schedule for controlling the systems to save energy. A data mining study is performed on the office applian...
متن کاملA Framework for Quantifying the Impact of Occupant Behavior on Energy Savings of Energy Conservation Measures
To improve energy efficiency—during new buildings design or during a building retrofit—evaluating the energy savings potential of energy conservation measures (ECMs) is a critical task. In building retrofits, occupant behavior significantly impacts building energy use and is a leading factor in uncertainty when determining the effectiveness of retrofit ECMs. Current simulation-based assessment ...
متن کاملA Review of Approaches for Sensing, Understanding, and Improving Occupancy-Related Energy-Use Behaviors in Commercial Buildings
Buildings currently account for 30–40 percent of total global energy consumption. In particular, commercial buildings are responsible for about 12 percent of global energy use and 21 percent of the United States’ energy use, and the energy demand of this sector continues to grow faster than other sectors. This increasing rate therefore raises a critical concern about improving the energy perfor...

The main share of energy consumption in the country and more than a third of its loss is in residential use. Per capita, household electricity consumption is far from the world standard, and the existence of subsidies for energy carriers in Iran, and consequently their low prices, causes occupants to pay less attention to energy consumption. Due to the policy of eliminating subsidies, the effec...
